No: 36, 18 February 2019, Press Release Regarding the 67th Anniversary of Turkey’s Accession to NATO

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 18.02.2019

Today (18 February) is the 67th anniversary of Turkey’s accession to NATO, which constitutes the main axis of our defense and security policies. Throughout 67 years, in line with the responsibilities and liabilities arising from being a NATO Ally, our country has successfully protected NATO’s borders and upheld the Alliance’s values and principles. Our NATO membership has also significantly contributed to our security.

With its strategic and unique place within the Alliance, Turkey actively participates in NATO’s decision-making procedures; makes significant contributions to NATO’s ability to respond to emerging challenges by its adaptation skills to fast-changing dynamics; assumes critical responsibilities in NATO-led missions and operations and works towards the enhancement of partnerships.

Today, as security challenges multiply, diversify and gain hybrid characteristics, it is clear that the principles of solidarity and collective security epitomized by NATO have become more important than ever.

It is imperative to fight against all the risks and threats, in particular terrorism which constitutes a threat to Turkey, to the Alliance, and to the stability of the Euro-Atlantic region as a whole, with determination and on the basis of the principles of indivisibility of security and Allied solidarity. We will continue to work with our Allies to ensure that NATO plays its part in this context.
